This lens offers three aspherical lens elements in addition to a Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass element, creating superior optics in all conditions. In addition, the lens offers both Canon's full-time manual focus and a powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that produces a fast and silent auto focus.

For wide angle landscape shooting, when a fast 2.8-f-stop does not show its strength, you may still be happy with this 4-f-stop-L lens, because the f-stop mostly will be set somewhere from an 8 f-stop through a 16 f-stop. The sharpness is identical on both Canon 16-35mm II and Canon 17-40mm lenses. The 17-40mm has a better sharpness at the wide end.
