This lens is an excellent midrange zoom lens for Canon Full frame DSLRs.  It is smaller and lighter than the 24-70. The optical is slightly sharper than the 24-70, but for light travel photo gear, the 24-105mm wins over the 24-70 because of its “105mm” search and IS capabilities.

Comment

For shooting fast moving objects, you might want to pick this 24-70 lens. However, for shooting lowlight static objects (e.g., museum environments) you might want to pick the 24-105 IS because of the IS advantage. For shooting portraits with background blurring, either pick the 24-70 or the 24-105, both are equally good. There is no difference between 70mm at f/2.8 vs 105mm at f/4 for the purpose of background blurring.
